Description:
WORLD WAR II THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS LEADERS, COMMANDERS AND PERPETRATORS "World War II: Six Years That Changed World History," a short history of the most violent conflict in human history, is more than a regular overview. Rather than trying to cover every major event of the Second World War, it alternates between telling the general story and zooming in on specific, game-changing events, the reasons behind key decisions and the thinking of leaders, commanders and perpetrators. Some of the major battles discussed: The Battle of Britain Operation Barbarossa The Battle of Stalingrad The Attack on Pearl Harbor Apart from the war in Europe and the war in the Pacific, the Holocaust and the building of the atom bomb are also more extensively covered. How and why the Nazi persecution of the Jews went from isolation, oppression and emigration, to concentration and finally extermination is told by looking at: Nazi ideology Nazi laws The attitude of other countries in the 1930s Quotes from books, memos and remarks by some of the main perpetrators, such as Adolf Hitler, Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring, Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Hoss and SS-Gruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich, who ran the Einsatzgruppen, a.k.a. SS death-squads. The creation of the atom bomb follows the path from the discovery of nuclear fission to the early British research to develop a nuclear weapon, code-named Tube Alloys, the American Manhattan Project and finally the decision to drop the bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. "Word War II: Six Years That Changed World History is a well-sourced, gripping and at times chilling overview of a war that forever changed who we are and how we view ourselves. If you are looking for a compelling read about those pivotal six years between 1939-1945, this book is for you." Get your copy now."

Description:
The industrial revolution was the single most important development in human history over the past three centuries, and it continues to shape the contemporary world. With new methods and organizations for producing goods, industrialization altered where people live, how they play, and even how they define political issues. By exploring the ways the industrial revolution reshaped world history, this book offers a unique look into the international factors that started the industrial revolution and its global spread and impact. In the fourth edition, noted historian Peter N. Stearns continues his global analysis of the industrial revolution with new discussions of industrialization outside of the West, including the study of India, the Middle East, and China. In addition, an expanded conclusion contains an examination of the changing contexts of industrialization. The Industrial Revolution in World History is essential for students of world history and economics, as well as for those seeking to know more about the global implications of what is arguably the defining socioeconomic event of modern times.

Description:
This volume considers the confluence of World History and historical materialism, with the following guiding question in mind: given developments in the field of historical materialism concerned with the intersection of race, gender, labour, and class, why is it that within the field of World History, historical materialism has been marginalized, precisely as World History orients toward transnational socio-cultural phenomenon, micro-studies, or global histories of networks? Answering this question requires thinking, in an inter-related manner, about both the development of World History as a discipline, and the place of economic determinism in historical materialism. This book takes the position that historical materialism (as applied to the field of World History) needs to be more open to the methodological diversity of the materialist tradition and to refuse narrowly deterministic frameworks that have led to marginalization of materialist cultural analysis in studies of global capitalism. At the same time, World History needs to be more self-critical of the methodological diversity it has welcomed through a largely inclusionary framework that allows the material to be considered separately from cultural, social, and intellectual dimensions of global processes.
