Description:
Faulkner's distinctive narrative structures--the uses of multiple points of view and the inner psychological voices of the characters--in one of its most successful incarnations here in As I Lay Dying. In the story, the members of the Bundren family must take the body of Addie, matriarch of the family, to the town where Addie wanted to be buried. Along the way, we listen to each of the members on the macabre pilgrimage, while Faulkner heaps upon them various flavors of disaster. Contains the famous chapter completing the equation about mothers and fish--you'll see.

Description:
Faulkner was a master of the short story. Most of the stories in this collection are drawn from the greatest period in his writing life, the fifteen or so years beginning in 1929, when he published The Sound and the Fury. They deal with many of the themes found in the novels and with the subjects and characters of small-town Mississippi life that are uniquely Faulkner's. In "A Rose for Emily," the first of his stories to appear in a national magazine, a straightforward, neighborly narrator relates a tale of love, betrayal, murder, and implied necrophilia. The vicious Snopes family of The Hamlet trilogy turns up in "Barn Burning" (1938), about a son's response to the activities of his arsonist father. Other inhabitants of Yoknapatawpha County appearing here include Jason and Caddy Compson, childish witnesses to the terror of the pregnant black laundress in "That Evening Sun" (1930), who fears that her lover will murder her.

Description:
"This Norton Critical Edition of As I Lay Dying, second edition, features William Faulkner's experimental Southern novel with editorial annotations. This canonical twentieth-century work centers on the Bundren family following the death of matriarch Addie Bundren. The story uses fifteen separate and largely unreliable narrators to describe the arduous trip that the surviving members of the family make to bury Addie in Jefferson, Mississippi. The "Backgrounds and Contexts" section covers Faulkner, his work, and early receptions of the novel. A variety of theoretical essays can be found in the "Criticism" section on topics including grief, matricide, and narration. A chronology and selected bibliography are also included in this edition"--

Description:
At last available in a single volume: comprehensive overviews and concise analyses of the key critical texts and approaches to the most-studied works of literature. By assembling extracts from essays, reviews, and articles, the columbia critical guides provide students with ready access to the most important secondary writings on one or more texts by a given writer. each volume: -- Offers a balanced and nuanced approach to criticism, drawing on a wide array of British and American sources -- Explains criticism in terms of key approaches, allowing students to grasp the central issues for each work -- Is edited by a noted scholar who specializes in the writer or work in question -- Includes notes and a comprehensive bibliography and index. Now recognized as two of Faulkner's greatest novels, the sound and the fury (1929) and as i lay dying (1930) were commercial failures in the decade following their publication. By the end of the Second World War, however, the reputation of both novels had grown, and Faulkner's great fictional creation, Yoknapatawpha County, had become as much a part of America as any real area of the Mississippi landscape. This guide explores the wealth of critical material generated by these two exceptional works of modern fiction. From the initially mixed critical responses to the novels in the early 1930s, the guide follows the enormous growth of interest in Faulkner's work across six decades. New writings shaped by a range of critical theories are discussed, offering the reader a clear view of the place now given to one of America's most innovative and influential novelists.

Description:
One of the great observers of Australian life, Henry Lawson looms large in our national psyche. Yet at his best Lawson transcends the very bush, the very outback, the very up-country, the very pub or selector's hut he conveys with such brevity and acuity: he make specific places universal. Henry Lawson is too often regarded as a legend rather than a writer to be enjoyed. In this selection Lawson is revealed as an author whose delightful, humorous, wry and moving short stories continue to delight generations of readers. This is the essential Lawson collection - the classic of Australian classics. 'Lawson's sketches are beyond praise.'Joseph Conrad 'Lawson gets more feelings, observation and atmosphere into a page than does Hemingway.'Edward Garnett
